Doubleplusgood that's what we say when we gather in the square every day Then we scream when the traitor's shown we hate his truth we hate our hope I wear a blank face so they never know that I know inside there was a time before I catch your eye the same mask of hate how can this be love in this place The before burns in me while we burn the before The before burns in me while we burn the before I risk their dogs I risk their love to touch something from before this world's begun You risk me I risk you to feel something real in this room (CHORUS) There was no before there was only the war there was no before there was only the war three is four only the war there was no before The best way to minds and hearts is to control the words they use and their art They can't control how we feel take away its name doesn't make it less real right? (CHORUS)

Any little scratch and they get in and start to fill the space beneath your skin with fearful love and oily gin and BB high above that's how they win That's how they win You start to live with the bombs you start to live with the death because they are all the places where you connect they kill your words they squeeze your chest and you think they love you because they let you have breath they let you have breath Real coffee secret bread a lover's body in my bed it's all I know of love it's all I know of love It's the most I've ever felt it's the only thing I can love Any more I see the lies the deeper I look into your eyes have to shelter this flame from their designs our love is the only solid point on a blurry line on a blurry line Look to the Proles like the man said they're stupid and happy but could rise instead Is their hope in them under skies of lead The future's not for us we are the dead We are the dead Real coffee secret bread a lover's body in my bed Breaking glass guns pointed at our heads we can't touch we are the dead we are the dead we are the dead you are the dead

They can break love they can break hope they can break the things you see and the things you know Under the spreading chestnut tree they broke you they broke me Don't do it to me do it to Julia Don't do it to me do it to Julie They can make love they can make hope because they make the things you see and the things you know They made me they made you and they made us love Him until the bullet goes through Don't do it to me do it to Julia Don't do it to me do it to Julie I love you I love you I love you as the bullet goes through I love you as the bullet goes through Julia I love you as the bullet goes through Julia

about

I was asked to participate in a local celebration of the 70th anniversary of the publication of George Orwell's 1984. Local poets and artists participated, writing new works inspired by the book. I wrote these four songs for the event, retelling the tragic love story of Winston and Julia contained in 1984. "miniluv", of course, is Newspeak for Ministry of Love where the story's climax takes place.

Thanks to my friend and poet Frank Patterson for inviting me to take part in the original event and inspiring me to create these songs. Thanks also to George Orwell for being a man of terrifying vision.
